Dugan. Burneshas of Albania explores a 500-year old tradition where women appropriate the dress and role of men in exchange for a vow of chastity. This tradition, practiced in rural areas of Northern Albanian, is done so that these people (called burneshas) can provide for their families and live freely. Jill Peters traveled to Albania over six years to document some of the last remaining burneshas, and this is the first time these portraits are being shown together as a series, along with Peters’ personal story of meeting them.
