By Carrie Schneider – Curated by Kendra Paitz
On view November 1, 2017 – February 28, 2018
From 2012–2014, Schneider photographed and filmed 100 female artists, writers, curators, and musicians in their own homes or studios as they read a book of their choosing by a woman writer. These sessions resulted in 100 photographic portraits and a 4-hour film, which show the readers at the moments they are the most immersed in their selected texts. Ever relevant, the Reading Women project offers insightful moments of tranquility from which to ponder the role of women in the arts following this year’s Women’s March in Washington, D.C.
After each woman’s portrait Schneider also photographed each reader holding their open books to create Reading Women (Books). For the Bal Harbor exhibition, stills from Schneider’s Reading Women film are paired with the corresponding images from Reading Women (Books).
